Zeeuws Meisje - Care for the World
Zeeuws Meisje #Freedom and #Brotherhood
Photography about connection, responsibility, and hope
After the success of Zeeuws Meisje #Equality, photographer Rem van den Bosch didn't sit still. In early 2020, a new project emerged: Zeeuws Meisje #Freedom.
This special photo series brought together Zeeuws girls from diverse cultural backgrounds in images that depict the four freedoms of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a contemporary and personal way. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear were translated into powerful photography, combined with poignant stories about freedom, war, and vulnerability.
A book was made from this series, in which image and story come together. The foreword was written by Anne Roosevelt, granddaughter of Franklin D. Roosevelt — a special affirmation of the international significance of this project.
The book Zeeuws Meisje #Freedom is still available and forms a valuable document about freedom, heritage, and human resilience.
Zeeuws Meisje #Brotherhood – Care for the world
In the midst of the corona period, in the summer of 2020, a new chapter emerged: Zeeuws Meisje #Brotherhood. In a time when it became painfully clear how dependent we are on each other, the desire grew to make this feeling of care, solidarity, and shared responsibility visible.
With a dedicated team and a group of special models, work was once again based on the Walcheren traditional costume. As with previous projects, the starting point remained respect for heritage, with contemporary interventions in the fabric. This time, the costumes were enriched with images of Zeeland products: onions, vegetables, mussels, oysters, lobster — symbols of land, sea, and labor.
The images that emerged radiate vitality, connection, and hope. They show that care for the world begins with caring for each other. These are images that touch with their simplicity and power, and that to this day form an important part of the collection.
Many of these works are now on display as photo art on the wall and form a tangible reminder of a period when brotherhood was not an abstract concept, but a daily reality.
Zeeuws Meisje continues to tell stories — about heritage, identity, and the times we live in.
With care, attention, and love for what connects us.
Love,
Ana
