What is Zeeland traditional costume? Meaning, history, and differences

Zeelandic traditional costume is among the richest and most varied traditional costumes in the Netherlands. Each region within Zeeland has its own forms, colours, and details.

More than just clothing

Traditional costume was never merely fashion. It provided information about marital status, faith, mourning, or celebration. Every detail had meaning—from jewellery to caps.

Regional differences

Walcheren, Zuid-Beveland, Tholen, Schouwen-Duiveland: each region developed its own attire. Sometimes subtly different, sometimes immediately recognisable.

From tradition to re-creation

Today, these costumes are rarely worn. However, through re-creations of traditional costumes, they remain visible. At Zeeuws Meisje, they are re-designed and documented with respect for heritage by Rem van den Bosch.

In this way, Zeelandic traditional costume remains part of the present, without losing its origin.
